GENERATIONS
A Novel in Three Voices
Inspired by a pencil drawing of the same name by Tommie Lee Thomason, Generations is a quiet, deeply felt family novel set on a Michigan farm across nearly a century. The story centers on one small nursery room and the women who pass through it: a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter, linked by the same walnut cradle, the same wooden toy soldier (the General), the same rag doll (Miss Button), and the same faded wallpaper of farmhouses and unexpected palm trees.
Told in three successive voices — Hannah, her daughter Ruth, and Ruth’s daughter Clara — the novel traces ordinary lives marked by love, loss, restlessness, and the stubborn continuity of home. From the early 1900s through the Depression, two world wars, and into the 1960s, the room itself becomes the true constant: a place that holds every generation, one after another, without ever needing to say much at all. It is a book about the small, ordinary rooms that carry a family’s entire history, and about the quiet ways love is passed down.
